Class Description

Bring an image that excites you—a photograph you’ve taken, a landscape, a meaningful place, or simply an image you can’t stop thinking about—and discover how to transform it into a successful glass mosaic. Over four immersive days, Michelle Sider will work closely with you to determine the materials, techniques, and artistic approach best suited to your image. Depending on your project, you may explore stained glass, smalti, texture, reflection, movement, light, depth, and dimension. Through demonstrations, hands-on instruction, individual feedback, and group critique, you’ll have the freedom to experiment and push your work in a new creative direction while developing your own artistic vision. You’ll leave with: * A deeper understanding of how to translate an image into mosaic * New approaches to color, value, composition, andamento, texture, and dimension * Greater confidence in making creative decisions about materials and techniques * A mosaic that reflects your own vision and artistic voice Four Days of Immersive Learning 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. each day, with a 45-minute lunch break. Your workshop includes PowerPoint presentations, demonstrations, individualized instruction and feedback, group critique, homemade lunch on Days 1 and 2, and a special afternoon treat each day. The workshop takes place in Michelle’s beautiful Michigan studio, with access to the organic garden and outdoor spaces. The studio is located near downtown Royal Oak, with hotels, restaurants, shops, and entertainment nearby. Prerequisite: This workshop is designed for students who have a foundation in mosaic-making and are ready to explore their own ideas more deeply. Once you register, Michelle will provide guidelines for selecting and submitting your image and everything you’ll need to prepare. And part of the pleasure of working together is enjoying the surroundings. Two of our four workshop lunches will be homemade and my treat, served on my deck overlooking the flower gardens. I’ll also have mid-afternoon treats to keep us going, with time to wander through the gardens and enjoy the peaceful setting of my light-filled studio.
