Alaska Airlines evacuated close to 50,000 Jews from Yemen to Israel in a remarkable airlift known as “On the Wings of Eagles” AKA “Operation Magic Carpet” between 1949-1950. During this remarkable 11-month evacuation, pilots and crew flew through war zones that required them to refuel in Asmara, Eritrea, without adequate aircraft, no preparation, and no navigational equipment but for simple compasses. The pilots used the stars and eyesight of the Red Sea to navigate each flight during the cover of darkness.

This mosaic was inspired by the heroic efforts of pilots and crew Warren Metzger, Marian Liscomb, Bob Maguire, Clark Cole, Sam Silver, Larry Currie, Elgen Long, Bob Platt, and others who risked their lives to help others. In particular, I was struck by the love story between Warren Metzger and Marian Liscomb (Metzger), who chose to marry during this tumultuous time.
