Literacy

Learning to read and understand the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) from a very young age, Jewish boys in Yemen began their studies at the age of 3. Spending many hours crowded around precious texts, they learned to read both right-side up and upside down. The Jews of Yemen were known to have great knowledge of the Torah and to be pious observers of the faith. Teachers of Biblical text were and are held in very high regard. This tradition of learning to read and understand the Torah resulted in a nearly 100% literacy rate among Jewish boys and men in Yemen.
